We are sharing our science experience at Kaitaia College.
On Monday Te Manga went to my Dads school, Kaitaia College. First we did biology. My dad had prepared the tables for our activities. On the tables were glass jars filled with clear or colourful liquid. In the liquid there were preserved animals. There was an armadillo dragon, some kind of adorable rodent, a toothy frog, two octopuses, one big one little, possum skin and half a fish. There were also five microscopes. One with yeast, one with a sand mix, one with a sliver of kidney, one with cockroaches and one with a bit of a sunflower stem. Everything was beautiful to look at, except the fish and the roaches.
Next we did physics. Our challenge was to drop an egg without it breaking. We were given a bread bag, one sheet of newspaper, one metre of string and fifty centimetres of tape. Me and my partner Nikki wrapped the egg in the newspaper and put that in the bread bag. We then taped the whole string to the bread bag and stuck the leftover tape onto the end of the string, trying to make it longer. I thought our idea was ingenious, but Unfortunately, our egg cracked. The only safe egg was Isla’s, which wasn’t surprising.
Last we did chemistry. First we tried to make a rainbow with sodium hydroxide, hydrochloric acid and universal indicator. Me and Nikki’s rainbow was not successful. After the rainbow we did an experiment with magnesium, water balloons and sulphuric acid. We put three pieces of magnesium in the water balloon and attached the mouth to the test tube. We then tipped the magnesium into the sulphuric acid and it started to bubble. The magnesium reacted with the sulphuric acid creating gas that filled the balloon up. The gas in the balloon was explosive and we had a candle going. When we brought the balloon to touch the top of the flame the balloon exploded! When the balloon popped it was quite loud.
It was really fun and I hope we can go again every year!
